Historic School Abuse Compensation: Teddy's Story Shows It Is Never Too Late to Speak Up

How Teddy Secured Compensation for Historic Child Abuse in School

For many survivors of childhood abuse, talking about what happened can take years. Some people stay silent because they are frightened. Others blame themselves, even though the abuse was never their fault. Many simply try to get through life without thinking about what happened.

Sadly, this is very common.

Many survivors do not report childhood abuse until they are adults. Some wait decades before they feel ready. Teddy's* story shows that even if many years have passed, it may still be possible to receive compensation.

Living With the Effects of Childhood Abuse

When Teddy was a child, he was sexually abused by a teacher at his school.

Although the abuse ended, its effects did not. Like many survivors, Teddy struggled with his mental health for years. The trauma affected his working life and led to a long battle with addiction.

Childhood abuse can affect every part of a person's life. Some survivors find relationships difficult. Others struggle with anxiety, depression or low self-esteem. Many find it hard to trust other people.

There is no right or wrong way to react to abuse. Everyone's experience is different.

Finding The Strength to Report What Happened

As an adult, Teddy received help from mental health services and slowly began rebuilding his life. Eventually, he felt strong enough to report the abuse to the police and his former teacher was later convicted.

For Teddy, that conviction was an important step. But he also wanted recognition for the lasting impact the abuse had had on his life. That is why he contacted Erika Medveckaite at Abuse & Assault claims to ask whether compensation might be possible.

The Case Was Not Straightforward

Historic abuse claims are often more complicated than people expect. In Teddy's case, the usual time limits had already passed. However, there was another problem.

The compensation scheme in Northern Ireland argued that Teddy should bring a civil claim against the school instead. Many people might have given up at that point. Instead, Erika carefully looked at the case and challenged both issues.

She gathered medical evidence explaining why Teddy had not been able to report the abuse sooner and argued that the time limits should not stop his claim. She also showed why the compensation scheme was the right place for Teddy's application.

A Positive Result

Erika's work led to Teddy receiving £12,390 in compensation in less than a year. For Teddy, the money was never the most important part. After everything he had been through, he wanted acknowledgement that what happened to him was wrong.

Once his claim was settled, he decided not to seek any further compensation for his psychological injuries. Instead, he chose to focus on the future and on enjoying life with his young family.

Teddy's Words

After his case finished, Teddy said:

"I would like to personally thank Erika for the exceptional support she gave me throughout my case. Erika was professional, approachable and incredibly understanding. Thanks to her hard work and dedication, we achieved a successful outcome that will make a meaningful difference to my young family."

Is It Too Late to Claim?

One of the biggest worries survivors have is that they have waited too long. Unfortunately, the answer is not always simple. Every case is different.

Just because the abuse happened many years ago does not automatically mean you cannot claim compensation. Many survivors only feel able to speak about what happened much later in life. That is something experienced abuse solicitors understand.

If you are unsure whether you can claim, it is always worth asking for advice before deciding it is too late.

You Are Not Alone

If you experienced abuse at school as a child, you are not alone. Many survivors carry the effects of abuse for years before feeling ready to tell someone. You should never feel embarrassed or ashamed about how long it has taken. The responsibility always lies with the person who abused you.

If you are thinking about seeking compensation, you do not have to have every answer before picking up the phone. A specialist solicitor can explain your options, answer your questions and help you understand whether you may have a claim.

At Abuse & Assault Claims, we know that taking the first step can feel overwhelming. That is why we listen first. There is no pressure, no judgement and no obligation to continue if you decide it is not the right time.

Sometimes, simply talking to someone who understands can be the hardest step. It can also be the beginning of moving forward.
