Youth Violent Crime – Southport Stabbings Attacker Named

Posted in Legal news

Last week I wrote a blog post about a predicted spike in violent youth crime during the school summer holidays. This week I am very saddened to write about the tragedy in Southport where 11 children and 3 adults were stabbed in a knife attack at a dance event.

The children and adults were at a Taylor Swift themed dance event when they were attacked by a 17 year old boy. The children at the event were ages 6 to 11 and the adults who were attacked are understood to have been trying to protect the children.

Three of the children have since died from their injuries and their photos are on all the news websites. The girls who have lost their lives are Bebe King, Elise Dot Stancombe and Alice Dasilva. Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool has now discharged 2 of the other children who had been injured, but they are still treating 5 youngsters for their injuries.

On 1st August 2024, the teenage boy was in court, and has now been named as Axel Muganwa Rudakubana. He has been charged with 3 counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder.

He had not previously been named due to his age but Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC has ruled his identity can be made public. It is understood he is due to turn 18 next week. The name has likely been released to stop speculation.

Axel Muganwa Rudakubana is now due to appear at Liverpool Crown Court again on 25 October 2024 for a pre-trial preparation hearing.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those affected, their families and the local community at this time.
